It combines three signals: a Domain Connect discovery record (_domainconnect TXT/CNAME), the NS record hostnames matched against a built-in provider list, and RDAP registrar data. The first signal that matches wins.

What is Domain Connect?

Domain Connect is an open standard that lets service providers configure DNS records on behalf of users with a single click. If your DNS provider supports it, the tool will show the discovery URL and provider metadata.

The vendor shows as 'unknown'. What does that mean?

None of the three signals matched a known provider. This can happen with smaller or regional DNS hosts not yet in our database, or with private/internal DNS setups. The raw NS records and RDAP data are still shown so you can identify the provider manually.
